The 7th-8th century CE wooden Axumite church Zarema Giyorgis in Tigray is one of the oldest churches in Ethiopia. It is also one of the oldest timber structures in the world and a rare example of Aksumite architecture with influences of Egyptian and Armenian art. The church requires urgent stabilization and conservation measures and will provide 25 jobs to local workers.
