Asili: An iteration of ICCROM's Net Zero – Heritage for Climate Action in Africa
Egypt, The Gambia, Madagascar, Mauritius
The four heritage sites: Citadel of Qaitbay (Egypt), Fort Bullen (The Gambia), the Betsileo and Tanala rice terraces (Madagascar), and Le Morne Cultural Landscape (Mauritius)—face severe threats due to climate change, including rising sea levels, coastal erosion, cyclones, biodiversity loss, and droughts. The project will carry out risk assessments, document local knowledge, train 10–15 professionals. Seed grants will fund site-specific solutions, with a focus on disaster preparedness and sustainable heritage management. These measures will contribute to cross-site exchange between the two fortresses in Egypt and The Gambia and two cultural landscapes in Madagascar and Mauritius.
