Conservation and Rehabilitation of the Khan Bani Saad Caravanserai, Diyala
Diyala, Iraq
The Khan Bani Saad, a small urban caravanserai constructed in 1688, is a unique example of Iraq's Ottoman architecture. A significant monument of the Khorsaran trade route connecting Mesopotamia and the Iranian Plateau, the khan was damaged by a car bombing in 2015.
The site requires conservation of the remaining fragments. The project is based on the findings of the study and conservation plan prepared with the assistance of the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut (DAI). The project has been designed in partnership with local institutions (Consulting Engineering Bureau of the University of Baghdad and the University of Diyala).
The project will train archaeologists and students and will create about 30 jobs.
