Following the devastating floods caused by Storm Daniel in September 2023, this project implemented emergency measures to protect key heritage sites in eastern Libya: the Museum and storerooms of Apollonia, and the Sanctuary of Demeter and Necropolis at Cyrene. These sites—home to important collections and remarkable Hellenistic structures—sustained severe damage from flooding, structural instability, and water infiltration. At Apollonia, interventions focused on repairing roofs, improving drainage, and stabilizing storage conditions to protect artefacts. At the Sanctuary of Demeter, newly exposed archaeological remains were documented, while damaged structures were consolidated and secured. At the Necropolis, urgent works stabilized vulnerable areas, cleared debris, and safeguarded newly uncovered features. Implemented in partnership with the Libyan Department of Antiquities, the project also engaged local communities and stakeholders through awareness activities and knowledge-sharing on heritage protection. Led by the University G. d’Annunzio of Chieti-Pescara, the initiative helped mitigate immediate risks while strengthening local capacity to manage and protect these significant archaeological sites.
