From Sea to Sand: Preserving and Reimagining the Heritage of the Aral Sea
Uzbekistan
Once a thriving fishing port on the Aral Sea, Moynaq now stands as a symbol of ecological and cultural loss. This project documents and protects the region’s heritage through archival research, conservation planning, and community engagement. Activities include safeguarding the ship cemetery and Museum of Ecology, improving signage, and training in storytelling. By combining documentation, protection, and education, the project helps reimagine Moynaq’s identity and promote sustainable heritage management in the Aral Sea region.
