During the 2020 monsoon season that caused serious damage to heritage buildings, and concurrent to the COVID-19 pandemic, the German Archaeological Institute and the Centre Français de Recherche de la Péninsule Arabique (CEFREPA) proposed urgent measures to safeguard Yemen’s museums. This emergency project laid the groundwork for a larger initiative that was thereafter approved under ALIPH’s 3rd Call for projects. In this preparatory phase, employees of Yemeni General Organization for Antiquities and Museums (GOAM) were trained to repair storage rooms and reorganize depots. Basic equipment was also purchased for five Yemeni museums (Sanaa National Museum, Baynun, Zafar, Ibb, and Ataq), which were threatened by the floods.
