Protecting weaver artisans in Myanmar: safeguarding cultural heritage and livelihoods at risk from conflict and climate change
Myanmar
Myanmar’s traditional weaving practices are the reflection of the country’s diverse ethnic and cultural identity and are vital to local economy. These traditions are at risk due to displacement of the population, environmental degradation, and climate risks, such as rising temperatures, irregular rainfall, and extreme weather. The project will focus on Shan State, Yangon, and Mandalay, where activities will include cultural documentation, capacity building through on-the-job training, distribution of sustainable raw materials, strengthening climate resilience of the craft sector, and facilitation of market connections. Partners include local organizations, artisans, and international market stakeholders, building on Turquoise Mountain Myanmar’s extensive experience since 2016.
