Restoring a Laboratory for Arabic-Script Manuscripts
Yerevan, Armenia
The Matenadaran – Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts holds a significant collection of Arabic manuscripts, including rare works of literature, science, medicine, and philosophy, many of which are at risk of irreversible deterioration. This project addresses urgent conservation needs through the assessment of 900 manuscripts, restoration of the most damaged items, and preventive treatments. It also strengthens long-term capacity by establishing a specialized conservation laboratory, training restorers, and fostering international cooperation.
