The project successfully restored the Worinyanga earthen mosque, a rare example of Djenne-style architecture in Ghana’s Upper East Region. Built in the early 20th century, the mosque is distinguished by its flat earthen roof supported by mud pillars and a mihrab adorned with projecting wooden elements, characteristic of Sudanic design. Severely damaged by heavy rains and years of neglect—including the collapse of its roof—the structure was at risk of further deterioration. Restoration works focused on rebuilding the roof and stabilizing the overall structure, ensuring the preservation of its unique architectural features. The project also engaged the local community through awareness activities highlighting the mosque’s cultural and historical importance, as well as its connections to historic trading centres such as Djenné and Bobo-Dioulasso. These efforts have helped strengthen local stewardship and ensure the long-term safeguarding of this significant heritage site.
