Kyrgyz oral traditions such as Manas epic poetry and temir ooz komuz (jaw harp) music are valuable examples of cultural and ecological heritage from the region. Led by the Aga Khan Music Programme and Ustatshakirt traditional music centre based in Bishkek, the project promotes these unique traditions while training 15 music teachers and 15 students in performance, composition, and cultural entrepreneurship. Through fieldwork with storytellers and musicians, school performances, and the creation of video lessons, interviews, and digital archives, the initiative supports both heritage transmission and teachers’ livelihoods. A key focus is to raise public environmental awareness by highlighting how Kyrgyz musical heritage embodies values of harmony with nature and respect for wildlife, clean water, and air.
