Revitalizing Traditional Decorative Arts at the Khujand Fortress, Tajikistan
Khujand
Created in Central Asia in late 14th century, Kundal is a traditional polychrome decorative wall painting of glue paint with gilded relief details of the ornament. At the historical Khujand Fortress, dating back 2500, in Tajikistan's second-largest city, this project will revitalize this ancient craft as well as decorative ceramics by providing practical workshops by master artisans for local youth. Improved workshop spaces, regional exchange with Rishton ceramicists from Uzbekistan, and input from French experts will support skill-building and market visibility. The goal is to ensure the transmission and sustainability of these crafts at one of Tajikistan’s most iconic heritage sites.
