The Talatat blocks—dating to the reign of Pharaoh Akhenaten—are rare and highly significant artefacts from a pivotal period in ancient Egyptian history. Currently stored in the “Pennsylvania Magazine” facility near Karnak Temple, built in the 1960s, these 16,000 blocks are at risk due to structural decay, high humidity, and inadequate storage conditions. Many have also never been properly documented. Led by the American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE) in collaboration with the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities (MOTA), the project will relocate the blocks to a newly constructed, secure facility. It will also expand digital documentation and carry out essential conservation treatments. In parallel, MOTA staff will receive training in advanced conservation techniques, ensuring the long-term preservation and study of this important collection.
