Safeguarding and promoting intangible heritage in remote areas
Kyrgyzstan
This pilot project launched AK JOL – Art Mobile, an innovative mobile initiative designed to safeguard and promote intangible cultural heritage in Kyrgyzstan, particularly in remote areas. Built from a recycled shipping container in collaboration with local artisans, the unit functions as a nomadic gallery hosting workshops, exhibitions, and documentation activities. The project supported the transmission and documentation of traditional crafts such as felting, embroidery, wood carving, and natural dyeing, while creating employment opportunities for local artisans, with a focus on women. By bringing cultural activities directly to communities, it strengthened cultural resilience, fostered collaboration between local and international professionals, and increased access to heritage and arts programming.
