The Ikat Connection: Reviving Central Asia’s Craft Heritage
Uzbekistan
The traditional ecological practices of silk and ikat production (literally "to bind" in Malayo-Polynesian languages; a complex resist-dyeing textile art where yarns are precisely bound, dyed in patterns, and then woven, creating blurred, cloud-like designs) in Uzbekistan are suffering from industrial pollution, the erosion of artisanal skills, and loss of authenticity. This project supports the revival of traditional production by restoring natural, sustainable dyeing; strengthening artisan skills, such as weaving; and promoting designs rooted in the local heritage as well as intergenerational knowledge tranfers. New eco-friendly ikat collections will be created and showcased at the annual Margilan Atlas Festival, while documentation and online resources will highlight the artistic and environmental value of Central Asia’s textile heritage.
